However, the Nemours Estate, a bright neoclassical French estate including the carriage house and an awesome automobile collection may be the most outstanding of them all. Some of the most well-known of the former DuPont properties include Longwood Gardens, Winterthur Museum and Gardens, and the Hagley Museum. Many of their estates and most of the land have fallen into the public domain. ![]() This area was once owned almost entirely by the DuPont family. Just a short walk from the entertainment complex is the DuPont Environmental Education Center, a 212-acre wildlife refuge that is home to many bird species, otters, turtles, and more.Ī few miles from the riverfront and downtown Wilmington are what’s known as the Brandywine Valley. The waterfront is home to Frawley Stadium where The Wilmington Blue Rocks play, Horizon Riverfront Ice Skating Rink, the Delaware Children’s Museum, an IMAX Theater along with hotels, restaurants, and more.įrom here you can walk or ride the Jack A Markell Trail, an 8-mile mixed-use bike path that connects the Wilmington waterfront with Historic New Castle. The Wilmington Riverfront took center stage during election season and that is a great place to start in this town. However, there are many reasons beyond politics to visit this underrated city. In 2016, the Presidential campaign of Joe Biden thrust Wilmington Delaware into the spotlight but this smaller city just 40 minutes from Philadelphia still may not be on your radar.
