The following list is a sampling of the paper's editorial positions available on Ballotpedia: Today, McClatchy publishes the Lexington Herald-Leader as its sole daily Kentucky newspaper. McClatchy subsequently sold 12 Knight Ridder papers, but the Herald-Leader was one of 20 McClatchy retained after the purchase. McClatchy also assumed Knight Ridder debt of $2 billion. On June 27, 2006, the McClatchy Company purchased Knight Ridder for approximately $4 billion in cash and stock. By 1983, the afternoon Leader was merged with the morning Herald into one daily edition. Both papers were published under what became the Herald-Leader Company. Stoll, editor and publisher of the Leader, acquired the Herald. The Leader was changed to the Daily Leader in 1895 and to the Lexington Leader in 1901. Another newspaper, the Kentucky Leader, began publication in 1888. In 1895, the Daily Press and the Lexington Transcript were combined into the Morning Herald.īy 1905, the Morning Herald was renamed the Lexington Herald.
